Nara is the capital of Nara prefecture. It is a relatively small city, but one of the most spectacular places in Japan. Nara is the first permanent capital of Japan. It was the cradle of Japanese culture, arts and crafts. Buddhism also flourished first in Japan here. Nara is, among other things, famous for a big Buddha statue.
