SAPPORO
Sapporo, with a population of more than 1.7 million, is the fifth largest city in Japan and the political and economic center of Hokkaido. Many foreigners were invited to Sapporo at the end of the 188s to help with its development, resulting in the somewhat "Western look" of the city. There are many fine sightseeing spots both in the city and in the surrounding area.
Odori Park
This park runs east-west througth the center of the city.
Statues and fountains are situated among the walkways,grassy areas and flower gardens.
The park is the site of the beer gardens and traditional Bon dancing in the summer and of the world-famous Sapporo Snow festival and the displays of White Illumination in the winter.
TV Tower
This 147-meter-high symble of Sapporo stands at the eastern end of Orori Park.
The observatory at the 90-meter level offers a panoramic view of the surrounding city.

This wooden building, built in 1878 as a drill house for Sapporo Agricultural College, is the oldest clock tower in Japan.

Hokkaido University
This university was established as Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876.
The campus is the largest in Japan, and is unique in that all the faculties are based on the same campus.

Besides Japan's largest atrium, this building contains a local beer brewery, many stores and restaurants, a movie theater and a hotel.

OTARU
Otaru is an old port city which once prospered as a center of commerce and fishery. The city is now famous for its canal and its glasswork shops.
